To be fair, bank accounts are only currently free as they are subsidised through charges etc levied on the account.

Now the FSA has intervened and allowed all those numpties that can't keep track of their money to reclaim the charges, and set a maximum fee for future charges, the banks need other ways of covering the costs of administering current accounts.

Very little of a banks profits comes from money earned through running current accounts.

Most other countries charge for banking, so it's no surprise that it has caught up with us here in the UK.

regardless of how they make there money, the fact remains they make a whopping profit each year so there is no need to charge people for using there accounts.

It is just greed

I could understand it if the banks were under financial difficulty

Banks are businesses. Its sole purpose for existing is to make a profit and increase the wealth of it's shareholders.

They aren't in the business of reducing profits / losing money.

You wouldn't take a paycut if people were reclaiming money from you. You would find other ways of generating money to recoup the losses you were making.

It says on the front page of the express that they want to make £40billion a year

Think its silly really but, what can you do, if you want a bank account you'l pay it!

there will always be banks that wont charge you, just to attract customers. Even if its only an offer for a year like Credit Cards, people will just move around bank accounts with it being so easy to do online these days.

I doubt it will happen though.

And people claiming back their charges isnt them losing money for a few reasons...

1. They got the money illegally. Its like me saying my profits are down as the money I stole off somone has to be paid back.

2. They invested these chrages they took off us and probably made a hell of a lot of money off them, enough to cover giving them back.

I fail to see how its like that, but maybe I'm an idiot.

When you put your money into a bank account they are offering you a service, regardless of what they can do with your money in their systems they are offering you a service by holding it in a secure manner and also allowing you to take it out and use it in various methods.

Yes but they make money from the services they offer, by charging customers they are making money at both ends, for offering the service then from income from investments

Simple answer...gather alot of people together who oppose this and open a new chain of banks which doesnt have this charge.

Therefore everyone will want to have thier accounts with your bank and you become super rich by the conventional ways which banks have for the past 60 years or so
