Last week I bought 2 old gokarts off my mate for a knockdown price that I couldn't refuse.. One of them's a 4 stroke, and the other is 2 stroke.
The 2 stroke is a slaag to start due to it being direct chain drive with no clutch, so I decided that rather than mess about I would just put a different engine into it. I quite fancied something with electric start, so I bought this engine;
Its a 97 bandit engine.. only a 600, but should still go like stink
I pick up the engine on Friday, and should get started on it pretty soon. I hope to have it fully working by the end of March.. but we'll see.
Update: I've picked up the engine & its a beast! Lovely condition & mostly all there. Just need to sort some coils & leads, oil cooler & exhaust manifold.
Gonna make a start on it on Monday, pics should hopefully follow.

Speaking seriously, what would actually be involved in doing this? Would it be possible at all?
If it can be done without raising the ride height drastically, and adding silly rollcages etc, I might actually consider it at some point.

OK, so last night me & my bro stripped the kart down ready for the work to start.
It's in a bad way at the moment.. nearly all the parts need replacing, but for not the important part is getting the frame extented & the engine mounted to it.
Here's the frame almost stripped down:
Then once it was fully stripped, before finishing for the night, we took some shady pics just to compare the engines. This is not the final location for the 600, its just where we plonked it for the photos to show.
And one of them together, which my brother decided he wanted to feature on....

Clutch won't be a problem, its cable operated.. and I have worked out how to sort the gear linkages from looking at other sucessful projects, such as Gixxerkart.
Once the frame has been extended & the engine is mounted I will be able to plan out the route for the gear-shift bars etc.. But here's a crude sketch of how it should work;
