after a convo with matty-g and joff, im servearly underknowledged about all this high def bollocks
ok...so i know my tv will show in HD if there's a HD source (sky hd, hd dvd). now my 2 year old cheapo dvd player is on its way out, when its playing it sounds like my old ferguson videostar rewinding so how much are these HD dvd players? do you need to buy special HD dvd's? or will ordinary dvd's suffice? i dont want to spend loads on a hd dvd player, and then spend more on a hd dvd when i can pick up dvds for a fiver etc
so basically i need a dummys guide to high definition

an HD player will set you back hundreds of ££ mate and yes you need to purchase HD-DVDs. These are more expensive that conventional DVDs.
If you're hell bent on jumping on the HD bandwagon then take a look at Toshiba's HD DVD player.
I myself am currently watching DVDs upscaled (so look slightly better than normal) through my player so I can't justify the jump to HD right now. (Although thinking about getting the 360 HD addon as it's only £120).
Hope this helps mate.

Matty I don't think that is a proper HD player mate. It 'upscales' to give a better quality image but I don't think it's true HD.
I could be wrong though. For that price I would bet against it being a true HD player.

Cool. I just wondered as I was thinking that didn't seem a bad price if it was a HD player Next best thing though till the proper ones come down in price?

there isn't any difference really. Just 2 different formats. Blu ray being backed by Sony and will come as standard in their PS3 (hence the price). Blu ray discs can hold more information also.
So it's HDDVD vs. Blu Ray really. Nobody knows who will come out on top. Some if not all manufacturers will be making DVD players that will play both formats.

esentially its the way they read/write the disks, both are HD
HD DVD players are cheaper and can play older dvds
Blur ray are expensive nearly twice as much and can also play old dvd's
Both offer same quality and storage of 50GB at the moment

i think that upscale jobby on that dvd player matt posted seems pretty swarve. might get one of those. i mean dvd quality is good, if it can be made better than so be it....tbh i cant imagine there'll be a world of differnce between a true hd dvd and an upgraded quality one?

there are loads of players on the market that will upscale your DVDs have a shop around. They do look better than normal DVDs but it all depends on the TV and the connection.

Thats right Luigi, the difference between an upscaled dvd and hd dvd isn't that great imo. If you're going from normal scart viewing to HD DVD then you'll be blown away.

what do you mean HDMI player? HDMI is a connection not a format.
