ok not sure if it is or not - heres my problem:

- mpg has dramatically decreased
- when i press accelorator down the engine makes a kinda sucking noise before the exhaust rumbles (as if you sucked air into your mouth - do it - it sounds exactly like that - is that normal)
- backbox is black with soot/dust
- stinks of petrol

pretty sure it is running rich just wondered if anyone on here knew and if they knew how to solve it or diagnos it proply without taking it to garage at the moment - any help will be muchly appreciated

Cheers,
Jon

The sucking sound would be the air filter mate.. it obviously would suck air in before you heard the rumble.. it needs to go through your engine first etc etc.. im not very technical.. but check for any split pipes. check all your spark plugs aswell incase they are not sparking as well as they should be

Mine was exactly the same.. Stank of petrol and used to get SOO much of it unburnt filling up in the back box all the time.. I used to get like 20mpg if that! I did the paper clip test and it showed up EGR.. Asked on here 'Warren.G' adviced me to change the EGR Valve which i have done today its its fine now!

Good luck mate

Mpg reduced, stink of petrol may be a fuel leak.

Have you removed the engines sprark plugs? Do they look like its been running rich?
