Ok, so i have an old crappy stair case, looks like its been glossed over and over, few spindles are missing and the board bit that runs on the outside (end of each step) has big knocks/dents/chips etc
What would a relatively cheap solution be to sorting it out?
The thought of replacing the stairs scare me greatly

New spindles and banister is easy.
Sand the rest down, fill and paint. Or get the board bit replaced/covered over if thats possible without removing the stairs.

The "board bit" is the string, it's fairly important you don't try and remove that or your stairs will fall apart. To be fair it would take some removing anyway, probably more work that replacing the stairs.
Best bet would be to strip back the handrail, baserail and spindles, clad the string in 6mm MDF and fit new spindles. The baserail would probably cover the MDF and it would leave you a smooth surface to paint.
