Basically, you'd be buying a car, insuring in your mums name with you as a named driver, then driving the car lots.

Insurance companies don't like that.

I did it, but if you crash, they might get funny over it...

And you don't build any no claims, which you'll regret (like I am) in the future.

I wouldn't say that Deano

It's just a case of getting no claims as soon as you can, you might struggle a bit now, but in a years time, you'll be happy that you did it.

And crashing and losing your mum's NCB wouldn't please her

agree with Robin, i ended up with no choice but to go under my mums insurance when i was 17 with my astra as no one would give me a cheap price, ended up paying the same as i did on my first car that was insured in my own name and never had any NCB, now building it up on 10 month bonus accelerators!

Young drivers need to accept that they sometimes have to have something shit for the first couple of years. Insurance companies have reason to sting younger drivers because a lot of them drive like their arse is on fire and cause accidents. I'm not saying it's all young drivers, or that you're going to, but that's how it is.
Also, a lot of insurance companies can be funny if the person who's name is on the policy isn't the registered keeper. DirectLine wouldn't let either of my parents insure my car in their name when I was in my first year of Uni, so I had to take it off the road until I could bring it with me.

Were you trying to insure under your mum and dads name at one address while saying it would be parked wherever you go to uni?

Nope. It was to be insured as being at their address while being left there so that they could drive it. I wasn't having it insured in my name if I wasn't driving it, and the halls I was in didn't have a car park.

dont agree with the go out on your own name straight away thing...

i did this to build up some no claims of my own, bought my corsa new (sxi) with 2 years free insurance, the 3rd year i paid 2400 for a years insurance, my insurance steadily came down year by year until now with full no claims i pay 360

my mate went under his dads name till he was 21 paying maybe 500 odd over his dads policy, when he was 21 he got a vts insured on his own name first time insurance for 1k.. ridiculous when i paid 2400 on a 1.2 corsa with 2 years no claims (which my insurance deal did)

stay under someelse name till ur 21 imo

I love Diamond

Me & Rach insured on the VXR, her 21 me 24 her obviously main driver £900 quid fully comp, and for the Corsa GSi they mirrored her NCB onto that car with me and her again that cost £300 a year

They are ace, always excellent to deal with and excellent in claim situations as Rach found out when someone drove into her old Corsa, they cover modifcations as well.

And I have a NCB building up on the Nova and my Corsa so its ace
