We have a 4post lift running on 1phase power, just used some clever gearing and a home made shaft to turn the cog.
Soooooo slow though, takes about 15mins to go up/down.
Get a pit :-)

the lift would be 80% to get another car in a garage, 20% to work on

You can buy 4 post lifts in single phase or 3 phase. Or they can be easily converted!
I just sold one of mine for £400 the chap who bought it found out afterwards it was cheaper to buy a single phase motor for it (£100) than get a 3 phase supply installed.

if they are hydraulic the main post rises as it has the ram in it but only that one post not the other 3 as they have internal cables

Personally i'd trust a 2 post ramp more than a 4 post ramp to put a car under. My 2 post ramp at work has safety catches so if it drops it gets held up if the hydraulics fail or something. Our 4 poster has cables and tends to creep down now and again.

I agree Joe but a 2 poster is only as good as the person using it.
Where i used to work we had the 4 poster come down on a mk2 escort rally car. Used to chock it after that lol

Thats also true, but we leave cars under 2 posters all the time.

planning permisson will not be a problem if the area already has a few garages and is not a preservation area.
a good set of drawings and a carefully designed building will easily go through planning.

the 4 posters have safety latches on them too... well the good ones do anyways
ideally you would want one with the extra feature on them so you can lift all four wheels off the ground at once....
i really dont see the problem in geting 3 phase into a shed if yer building it from scratch... its just 3 lives... but as said earlyer in this thread you will probably find that the ramp can be converted to single phase... infact theres probably a very easy schemetic diagram on it somewere to do this conversion...
the 4 posters are great for tracking the car if you decide to buy that equipment..

im pretty sure that 1.5m will be fine, just make sure the design of the garage fits in with the rest of the buildings around.
also as long as the design meets the planning and building regulations then the neighbours can appeal but it would need everyone in the area of the new building to object and even then it would probably still get passed.
did some plans for 4 new houses last year, 3 storey ones that over looked a full row of semi detached houses and blocked there sunlight for most of the day. some of the neighbours objected and it still got passed and they are now built.
get the plans drawn and submitted to the council and im sure it will get passed.
