Getting in to it now. Got back to the village and got the sheild and sword. Collected all the particles of light, took me a few goes. Restored back to elf form and encountered the white wolf. In the temple and killed the big spider, raised the platform and got to the monkey encaged on top of the totem pole.
5hrs 25 in now.

I can't believe how much help Midna gives you.
You really need to play the Wii version for the full experience though Stcheven. You can't beat waving your arms about weilding the sword
