throttle bodies on standard cams, know i wont see big power gains from the tb's without different cams but cams put me over my budget for now.
i'll be using a c16xe head on a x14xe block, using standard internals (i think)apart from arp rod bolts.
this alright to do, will be changed in near future but just for now

You'll be able to rev to about 7.8k with standard cams TBH, RobHayes did it with his Z16XE.

insurance on the 1.6 with mods declared is shocking compared to the 1.4 with mods declared, so for a good 6 months to a year its gotta be the 1.4. plan is to use the 1.6 head so inlet, exhaust etc is right for when the 1.6 gets put in. should just need it remapping for the 1.6 right? or am i way off?

That's right, and TBH, I doubt the map for the 1.4 or 1.6 would be much different, I bet SBD only supply one base map, whatever the engine.

cant see me adding 20bhp from just upping my 1400 to 1600, then id have ruffley 140bhp from just an inlet and exhasut
i think the 1400 makes bigger gains in power from mods, but 1600 is alway going to be better tbh

I gained 14bhp on an inletted engine, going from 1.4 to 1.6.
20bhp with TBs is about right I think.
It's all about the torque anyway.

what factors effect the torque? would it be silly to use long trumpets on the 1.4/1.6 head combo?

longer trumpets = more torque less top end power i think
as for the original Q the standard cams are more than good enough, they peak high anyway (around 7000rpm)

i thought the cams would be ok, strange that the length of the trumpets have that effect. is there a sort of intermediate?

You might/will need cut the firewall to fit long trumpets in a nova bay.
