As well as the 'bird, i've got a 1992 Ford Escort 1.6, with a carb. I've had a bit of an oil leak, which I suspected was the rocker cover gasket. However, when I removed the filter today to get to the gasket, there was a load of engine oil around the top of the carb and bottom of the air filter (we're talking a coating, rather than a mist).
What could have caused this? Is it related to the gasket leaking

Positive. Theres a little pool of it in the dip of the inlet manifold (which would presumably have been caused by the gasket leaking, as its on the outside)

Don't worry Dan, it's just oil deposits from her breathing a little heavy.
They do breathe in to the air box.
Petrolium deposits will come off with carb cleaner, oil deposits will come off with brake cleaner.
You could have a restriction from muck build up in the breather system or it could just be down to engine wear. Just wipe it out regularly and keep a clean filter in there.
