It would appear on closer inspection that my house is wired using cable covered in a lead sheath, not plastic or rubber as expected.
I assume that this means that the wiring is very very very old 
Can any one shed any light on this?

Yes, it would appear to be very old cabling.
Might be wise to get it rewired

Yeah this stuff was widely used in the before BS's came in to play & phased it out, its generally ok so long as its left alone & you dont touch it.

its a safe bet that the insulation is probably knackered by now. get a re-wire.
