Had my car in a garage for a week, it was giving a really bad clicking noise from the head. The garage found the oil strainer was blocked so they reckon that was the problem, it still makes the noise. They said its not safe to drive and could go boom, but they havent even stripped the head down to see what has happened. What do you reckon i should do? get the engine stripped or get a quote on a new engine -1.4 16v corsa by the way. So annoying seeing as i need the car for work!

Describe the "clicking" noise a bit more please, were abouts in the engine does the noise seem to come from.
Is it tappety and does it go quieter when a bit warmer? if so then your engine wont blow up ffs!

oil level is fine, and it's had an oil change. Its not tappets at all, sounds completely different! cambelt is fine too, so no bent valves. they can't get their heads round it either.

firstly theres no tappets in an x14, ther is hydraulic lifters.
have they stripped the cambelt, cams and lifters out to check them? 9/10 times its a faulty lifter that causes loud ticking noises from inside the head, theres not really much else inide a head that will cause those symptoms without major running problems.

nope they haven't stripped it at all. "we've been too busy" they've done 2 hours work on it in a whole week!

if its really loud could be your main bearing in the bottom end. When mine went sounded like it was coming from the rocker and was really loud, can hear it inside the car.
dead engine
But thats WORSE case scenario Im sure its something simple.
