Just got a lovely shock from a seriously buggered electrical cable for the pump and UV filter in the pond.
I got some outdoor switches for it, so it can be turned on and off from outside (whats needed) aswell as the main breaker indoors, but the old cable has broken down & the rubber is all naffed.
What would be best sort to use? The cable is to be routed underneath the edge of the lawn, about 8" down. Last one lasted about 4 years, so pref. something which will be better.

we've ran 3-core SWA mains cable (was original from maplin's) down to our shed, its about 10mm thick and so far it's lasted over ten years. Was fairly expensive though.

Well I'm sorting this out for my parents. Mum doesn't mind the expense, but my step-dad always tries to cut corners and do it cheaper.
I'll have a look in maplins later on and see what I can find

Example of his cheapness... Just done a temporary job on the pump & filter so can atleast start to clean the water... And found this little gem tied in a plastic bag BURIED behind the filter...

Bought this yesterday, hopefully be here early next week. As for now, I've laid down some fresh cable as recommended, but put it inside some plastic gas tubing for extra protection and sealed the ends with silicon.
Wouldn't mind but next year its being moved to the other end of the garden

i find some peoples lack of sense strangely ammusing. how anyone could knowingly bury a standard 13 amp plug and socket in their garden and assume it will be ok as its in a plastic bag is beyond me.

you want some 16mm twin and earth, no extensions! out to a ip66 socket.

you certainly don't want to run twin&earth, FFS!  A spade would go through that no worries.
Like i've said, you want to run shielded/SWA cable! Found the stuff we have - 10mm 3 core, it's wired straight onto the ringmain via a fused socket and then an RCD socket is used on the other end

10mm is FAR too big for what you need, 6mm would be more than enough. Fit a 16A RCD on the mains end for extra protection.
Armoured cable is pretty expensive so keep to the right size and you wont pay over the top and 10mm SWA is pretty awkward to bend and work with.
I ran a 3G 4mm SWA out to an IP rated adabtable box wich we buried in a flower bed then you can plug your pump etc into the box where its all sealed and water-tight.

Best product would have been the Blagdon armoured cable kit.....Excellent kit and definately worth the money when it comes to something serious like electric.

We got armoured cable running out to an IP66 junction box with 6 switches, individually fused, and an RCD protecting the spur from inside the house. Dont forget if you are putting IP rated stuff up on the walls outside, that you need to seal the holes used to screw it to the wall with silicone
