I think if you are scared of an air lock you start the car with the rad bottle lid off and any airbubbles in the system will bubble out through rad bottle.
Not 100% sure tho.

take the hoses off on both sides of the rad, i.e flush it seperately to the engine to avoid flushing shite around, just put a hose in and rinse until the water comes through clear, then do the engine.
halfords coolant will do, it wont make much of a differance what you use, just makes sure you use the correct concentration though usually 2 parts water 1 part coolant
i personnaly would check the thermostat also, take it out and put it into boiling water to see if it opens correctly.

Drain old coolant, fill expansion tank. Run car and top up tank if it goes low. Once the car reaches about 98-100 the water will start to boil. Turn car off and it will boil over. Leave to cool, then top tank up. That should get rid of any airlocks.

Which ones?
If there like a spring clip, then you just press the "tabs" together with pliers and remove it down the hose.
