My Astra has decided to die.
About 10 miles earlyer i was at a roundabout and didn't want to wait for the fast moving cars so i got my Derv power going and the turbo started sounding very metalic. Might have been on it's way out but still had power so wasn't bothered.
On my way home i joined the M1 at jct 33 and there was no power. It took ages to even get to 70. "turbo gone".......?
Got to just before jct 34 and white smoke filled the air coming out of my exhaust..... "oh shit".....
Managed to get over to the hard sholder to see cars driving with their hazzards on and their light now on (it was at 6pm) coz this smoke was so thick that you really could not see.
I popped the bonnet and checked the oil.... Empty.
Had a look at my sump, dry. Then i noticed a few drips of oil.... Looks to be where the air from the intercooler goes into the engine.
Rang my mate with the CL who has one of those metal tow bars to tow me back to my new garage at my mates house.
I never thought that my Astra was going to be the 1st car that i was going to work on in there.

The turbo is at the back, the oil looks to be coming out at the front.

Do you see the yellow bit that is on the thing to prop up the bonnet. It's round there.

You said it's coming out the cold side of the intercooler, sounds like the I/C has filled with oil, and plooms of white smoke sounds like oil seals to me.
Can we place bets?

Bets away
The air goes into the engine at the front and not at the rear.

I know Steve
The air has to go through the turbo though, so if the oil seals have gone there, it'll be blowing oil through the intercooler, then into the inlet side of the engine, meaning you get oil at the front...

Leaking out of the weakest point. That i'm thinking. I'm gonna have a look on friday. Remove stuff like the intercooler and see if it's full of oil.
I was going to buy a hybrid turbo for it after xmas...... not got the pennys right now

to uprate the turbo on these engines wont u need to uprate everting else as surely the internals cant cope with just wackin a big turbo on

Not quite a big turbo, it's from turbo dynamics. I've just read what he's emailed me and he doesn't explain what the difference is. TBH i have no idea

Just got a reply from TD.......
Hi Steve,
I only remember them when someone forwards me the old ones as well...the hybrid
unit has a larger compressor wheel and machined housings to suit modified
turbine wheel and up rated thrust bearing to handle extra load then it is blue
printed to the finished article...I am guessing you mean the internals of the
engine...I doubt it as you are not going silly with the power but there is
always extra stress when modify like this...
