I mean how do they get the data, im wanting to know so i have a project which i want to do.
Going to build an in car computer, then going to create a program to read the ecu so i can then print on screen certain ecu varibles and maybe add my own sensors to the engine and print them onto the screen aswell . .

try on fleabay, there is always cheap obd software on there. You will also need a cable to go from your comm port on the pc to your diag plug which is OBD 1

Ah, another question. Will I still be able to use this kit if I ever decide to go for a C20LET?

not sure on that one. I cant see it being a problem aslong as you wire the conversion in properly ie to the diagnostic plug
