Didnt they do this on 5th Gear last series? And found that both of the engines ran fine if you topped it up with the correct fuel?

petrol works by spark ignition, therefore the fuel will more flammable, diesel works by compression ignition kind of forcing it to blow up of ypu get me, diesel will more than likely turn nasty in the petrol engine cylincer and score the bore though and then youve got issues

Petrol in a diesel isn't bad, I've known people to fill up with unleaded and it's still started and run fine for the whole tank, it's just very smokey.
Diesel in a petrol engine will effectively melt your engine, as diesel burns at such high temperatures, if you start the car and the diesel runs through the engine then you are looking at a new engine.
Learnt all this when I worked in a Petrol Station. Some guy picked up his Unleaded Merc from the dealers (Brand new 07 plate!), put diesel in it, started it and it cut out before he was even off the forecourt. Saw him a few weeks later and it cost him 5k to get repaired

diesel also lubricates thing like rotary pumps on diesels. we had a passat in a few months ago a few hundred miles on it, had petrol in it, run till it stopped - new engine and fuel system.. usually ok if you drain and refill with the correct fuel tho

seen it loads at my work and i will say diesel in a petrol is worse
petrol in a diesel is not too bad when run with it in, smokes a bit but a drain and change of fuel filter and a tank of diesel ususally sorts it out. where as diesel in a petrol can proper fuck up the engine if ran

About 5years ago my bro's wife loaned her car to her mother (petrol fiesta) who had been driving the diesel van all day well as a treat for loaning her the car she decided she'd fill it up for her.
She filled it with Diesel! drained it, filled it with petrol and although at 1st it was very smokey, it soon sorted itself out and was fine.
