.....garage who MOT'd corsa said that although the car was 4 weeks away from the end of its current MOT, becuase it had failed, it was now illegal to drive it on the road
I was under the impression that if you're car failed you could technically still drive it till the current MOT ran out?

As far as i know once you have it tested and it fails thats it until it passes.

I had my car MOT'd early this year and it failed. I was able to carry on driving as the MOT didn't expire for another month.

I believe this to be the case also, and would make sense.
After all, if the car fails, it isn't road worthy.
Just like if the police pulled you over for dodgey tyres (or any other MOT failure) they wouldn't say "oh, it doesn't matter, your MOT isn't due yet".

but it failed on a ball joint that was 50/50 on the margin.
If I did not test the car it would still be legal to drive (unless took to a test centre and checked)
I have always been under impression that you could still drive the car (unless illegal like having a bald tyre) until the MOT runs out
new computer system has apparently put a stop to this, so there is no point getting the car MOT'd after 11 months really

Its already done, not the point
I am on about being able to drive a car that has failed an MOT even though it has 4 weeks left on the old MOT
a LOT of people I know have done this and have not been told by MOT station that the car does not now have a valid MOT

That MOT station sounds a bit wank, and does everything by the book by the sounds of it.

I was told my existing MOT was valid as it still had some time to run out.

IIRC, it depends if the garage does a "pre-mot" or an mot. Not sure though.
