is it the plasic white bit that sits in the gear box then the speedo cable attaches through the top of it.
If it is then yes I have had one snap before.
My speedo cable snaped then chewed up the plastic sensor, didn't cause the car to run bad though, just had no speedo.
Anyway brought mine from Vaux rocked in there with the cable and told them I needed the plastic bit that goes on the end of this.
£10 and alot of swaering later, as I found it a nightmare re routing the new cable and it was fixed.

i dont have the plastic bit in the top of the gearbox! so where is my vss?? grrr

it should be there cammack near the gear selectors on top of the gearbox!

is it like a plastic tude which the cable goes down into??? and the vss is on the end of that?

lovely jubbly! doesnt look to easy to get it all off thou, then replace and put back together... fiddley fecker!

This happened to my old 1.4 8v, turned out to be a dodgy spark lead 
Happen more in wet weather by any chance?

they are easy enough, just use a adjustable spanner and the jobs a gooden
