I used to ping people if someone had a name on mIRC that i wanted, I would constantly do it with certain packet sizes until they lagged out and then i could rob the name 
That obviously isnt the answer you need though!

I used it to monitor packet loss on my old ISP to prove to them it was wank.
ping -t www.bbc.co.uk > ping.txt
Left it running about 2 weeks and sent the fuckers a 9mb .txt file
