Looking at getting an external HDD to put all my films on etc and other stuff that I never watch/use, but will need to. This will then free up my HDD and hopefully it won't be so laggy.
Any recommendations? I borrowed a mates quite a while ago, that had a power cable, fan etc. Are they all like this?
I want one that'll have quite quick transfer rate, so I presume one which has a seperate power cable and cooling will be better?!
Any advice would be welcome

Whats your price range?
What kind of size hard-drive do you need?
All external hard-drives have seperate power cables sadly  i was after one a little while ago and couldnt find ANY bus powered ones (powered from the USB)

I don't mind on separate power cables - at least it won't steal power from my PC 
Price range - no idea how much they cost really.
Capacity - at least 120GB. Probably max in fact
Spec - 7200rpm would be nice.
Just thought some people might have one and could recommend it

120GB is pointless, you can get a 400gb drive for not much more money  I got a harddrive enclosure which means you can choose whatever hard drive you want to go inside it, i got two 500GB drives out here in Spain with me. Bonus is if anything goes wrong or you want to upgrade, standard drives are cheaper to replace. The caddies can run on either USB2 or eSATA, transfer speeds are pretty good (I get around 14MB/s)

ah right, nah, i dont really have any i can reccomend. A slightly cheaper way to do things is to get a decent internal Hard-drive (they are cheaper) and buy a caddy for it (about £15 on e-bay)

why not just install a normall HDd to your pic? can get 500gb for about £55/65

hmmmm, getting a caddie may be an option. I want it external so I can take it places with me.
So a caddie is essentially a carrying/connection device, which allows you to use a standard internal HDD externally?

Yea.. essentially, if you buy an external drive what you are buying is an internal drive, and a caddy togethor, the only difference is the caddy cant be opened to change the drive, and is more expensive this way.

Bloody hell, external hard-drives have come down soo much in price.. That's actually cheap as chips..
I would advise you to get that tbh

i have a 500GB western digital one, works a treat. depending on how much you want to pay you can either just have USB, USB and firewire or USB, firewire and eSATA.
the drives in the MyBook range are interchangeable, so if you wanted to change it in the future you can do

Good to know - and I don't think I'll need 500GB so can save some money - if they are interchangeable, then I can easily upgrade if I need to in the future.

i said they are interchangable, i didn't say it was easy it can take alittle fucking about, but when you've done it once you'll be able to do it again without much of a problem. i also had to use an adapter for the power. so it might not be completely straight forward.
also don't know about the controllers as i only changed from a 400 to 500 (the 400 drive was shagged) but the smaller models may have different controllers, i don't know for sure

my recommendation would be to buy a bigger one now deano, instead of upgrading in the future. as i found, you'll always fill it.

Too true, i just got a new laptop, i thought "160GB, yea.. that'll keep me going for quite a while, screw an external" one week later.. i have about 10GB left

All seems good so far, took about 20 secs to set it up. 10 mins to transer about 20GB of stuff. Just hope it does'nt fuck up and lose everything now
