Have you looked into dedicated hosting at all? I've been considering it but have no idea what is good or bad, nor do I have £50 a month to spend on it

Ours is a little over 150pm I think but that is for 2U. Cheaper if you only need 1U of chassis.
I'm sure leasing a server is cheaper than buying as well when you factor in total cost.
50pm for your own leased hardware is not a bad price.

Not so much that it isn't a good price, but more that the site wouldn't support itself (to start with at least) and I can't afford to pour money into it.....
Nor do I understand what I want, lots of bandwidth, little hosting space, middle both, or the other way round completely. Nor do I know how different hardware set-ups will perform. I just know I want PHP and MySQL support, other than that, I think I need to do a lot of research......

If you co-locate you get as much space as your server has hard drive.
Modern hardware isn't expensive. I would imagine if you set up a lease deal at the moment you would probably end up with a spec comparable to the three year old CS machine in terms of its ability to turn requests around.
