As the steering wheel is in my bedroom after taking some close up pics. I don't want it going off and me thinking a bomb has gone off in my bedroom.
Shall i just go to bed or take it into the garage?

not sure they can go off on their own 
Once in a carpark years ago i was thumping my steering wheel after an arguement with an ex and all of a sudden the air bag shot out, was mortified, it split my lip and everything

it happened to a friend of mine in his C3 whilst driving lol! didn't hit anything and it simply shot out!

technically there is an explosive charge of some sort inside and should be locked away under lock and key
however i doubt they would go off unless under extreme conditions ie temperature/humidity etc

it was quite funny looking back, i was in a carpark with loads of mates and their cars and i was so angry i thumping the steering wheel, saying 'fucking wanker' and all of a sudden 'bam' and i screamed, was more embarrased than anything lol

The air bag really should never go off. it takes an ac voltage charge to activate. I really cannot see you hitting the steering wheel would set it off, maybe, but nearly impossible.
However, just by touching the pins on the back, static in the human body can activate it.
I wouldnt suggest keeping it in your room, when removed an air bag should be locked away in a steel cupboard for safety.
Make sure when u carry it, that u carry it face up, so if it blows it flys down and hits the floor not up in the air at your face.
We once let an air bag off face down on the floor, it went over the roof of our workshop, which is a good 40ft high.

I agree with Dan, Its 99% imposible for you to set it off by hitting it, the sensors are not located in the steering wheels
The only way that your story couldof happened is if you had a faulty AirBag which would have gone off at that time no matter what you were doing,
I cant see it happening tbh

well thats good to hear tbh, scares me when someone bangs their steering wheel that it could happen again. cost bloody £180 aswell to get new one put in!

thats cheap-when airbags go off you normally have to replace the ecu as well cuz they have been in activation mode.
did at vauxhall anyway

They still contain explosive charges so I'd never keep one in my house.
They're PACKED with talcum powder too, to preserve them (also helps the police find prints after a crash, as I found out)
Set it off in your garden and bin it
