If i burn my hd files (.mkv and .avi) to a normal dvd, how much quality is lost? is it still alot better than a normal dvd?
Say i download the hd versions of planet earth, compared to a normal version of it, will putting it on to a dvd make it the same quality or still better?

If you burn the mkv file to disc it'll still be hd, if you burn it as a dvd it'll be just the same as a dvd.

It depends, if you have enough information to max the capacity of the DVD then it'll be at the highest quality DvD.
If you're downloading files that are dvd rips but have been recompressed at a lower sample rate than the original, then they arent going to be as clear as they should be, the more the information the better the image. remember this

He has high def avi and mkv files, these will not be high def when burnt as a dvd.

He's basically wanting to watch hd planet earth on his ps3, burning it to a dvd will be nowhere near the quality of the original, although the ps3 will upscale it.

If you have a dual layer writer you can burn it to a dual layer disc 8gig, but not sure if the PS3 will play dual layers

semi sorted it, burning .avi files as a data disc. works ok, then stutters from time to time.

dual layer dvd, twice the space compared to a normal dvd, would solve quality issues, but does the PS3 support DL media

Its not a space issue i have tho, its the issue that the files are being burnt as dvds rather than HD files. I think ive semi sorted it. Now i can get them to play on the ps3, its just stuttering.
Im now gonna try burn again but on slowest speed, as i did it on fastest.

Yep I always burn at 2.4x speed with dvds or occasionly 4 x, 2.4 X is a lot more reliable never get any coasters at that speed

You can get them for £180 ish. I'm sure play.com had them. Still too much.
