Got a Dell Inspiron 1300. Had it 3 years and recently it's been running slow as hell.

Done the usual de-frag and cleanup. I've only used 15gb out of 33gb as I keep most of my stuff on my hard drive.

Any tips on making it run faster?

Have you ran a spyware check?. Down load spybot, adaware and use windows defender to scan your pc.

Should my anti-virus software (Norton) not pick this up?

the antivirus is exactly that, anti virus. spyware and adware are completely different things.

then you have to call into question the effectiveness of norton. i've had instances where just taking norton off a machine frees it up alot. then theres the viruses that it lets through, in recent studies it didn't compare well to other software such as AVG or avast which can be downloaded for free.

this is my first piece of advice, get rid of norton and download the free version of AVG and do a scan with that, you may be surprised at what you find!

here's a link to the download site

As above, Norton is the first thing I'd bounce when getting hold of a new pc or older. Some versions of Norton are pretty resource hungry in their own right and a pain tbh. Get some better free software and go with the above, scan the machine etc..
