edit: just read somewhere its a pipe that comes from the wastegate and should techincally be rejoined to the exhaust but most people dont do and dump the gasses into the atmosphere, it basically keeps the turbo spinning a bit longer than normal. very noisy and banned from most tracks due to noise and the fact it bypasse's the cat so fails emmisions

Well normally when a wastegate opens on a turbo, its an internal wastegate, so dumps the gas back into the rest of the system. When you have a fancy aftermarket turbo that uses an external wastegate you either need to plumb it back into the exhaust or just have a screamer pipe dumping it to the atmospher.

That is a perfect example^
Note the external wastegate dumps its excess exhaust gas back into the rest of the system via the smaller pipe by-passing the turbo.

It will never fail emissions due to having a screamer pipe, if it did I wouldn want a damn good reason as to why they were doing burnouts while doing the test.

The wastegate only opens when you get to your pre set boost level and vents to stop the turbo spinning more. So if it opened during and mot I wouldnt be veyr happy.

They are childish and stupidly loud but it still puts a smile on my face when ever I drive it. Main reason I fitted one was that CBA and didnt have the money to put a proper / bigger exhaust on and stayed with 2.5inch. So venting to the atmosphere meant I had in a way increase the diameter of the exhaust.
