dear me, this thread has got out of hand
at the end of the day, i personally enjoy spending a couple hours once every weekend CLEANING my car which could involve wash, claybar, polish, sealant and wax.
at no point would i get a laptop out and measure the micron depth of the paintwork and machine polishing it so the micron depth is the same all the way around the car.
wash, polish, wax etc TO ME, is not detailing as it isn't really an extreme form of cleaning, they are all products you can pick up in any RUN OF THE MILL motorfactors for quite cheap.
BUT...If someone want's to DETAIL their car using EXPENSIVE products, why would it annoy you? it's their car at the end of the day, be it a £10,000 or £100,000 car, it's still the persons pride and joy and they can do what ever they like.
i'd rather someone i bought a car from took car of it rather than using a gritty sponge and pikey tesco value fairy liquid for shampoo.
just the same as you like time attack etc or people like putting ICE in their car's, many people like DETAILING or CLEANING, which has no affect on how you live your life, therefore why moan

I can't be arsed personally. Wash the thing and drive it. Wax every so often.
End up cleaning and detailing so much that you daren't drive it in case a grain of dirt touches the paint.
Sod that, may as well keep it in cotton wool in a museum.

i hope not
saw phi has posted page before
at the end of the day though, if people want to DETAIL their cars, let them.
i have lots of praise for people who keep their cars clean, it's a hobby i like, i'm not into racing/ICE, and find it relaxing to give the car a once over.
i do understand what annoys people about calling it detailing when it's not, but e have the americans to thanks for that

I detail my car but still call it "washing". However, I go the whole hog with claying, waxing, polishing, sealing etc.
Not only does it create a better finish, but it makes cleaning next time a whole lot easier.

lol at all this
i have to laff a work, as we sell cars as well as fix them and we have always had a valeter to clean the sales cars
the new bloke is a ''detailer'' well so he says anyway, and to be honest he doesnt really do a good job hes crap cant really see show he can call it detailing as all he is doing is washing then polishing
some time he takes 2days to do a whole car and im thinking what the f*ck do you do all day?? i could do it in half a day

Tough one this....
I agree with adam in principal as 'detailing' somthing like an astra or any car that you use day to day is pretty pointless BUT on the other hand it only needs to be done properley once and your car will only ever need a quick once over again with a good clean for the next however many months.
I will go as far as using a clay bar because it works wonders and gets the panel smooth for wax.I used to spend hours cleaning my cars though Relaxing.

Isn't detailing when someone professional does it with a MOP etc?
TBH I like using all the products. It was nice yesterday so I spent the afternoon in the garden cleaning my car

I think the term "detailing", is overrated at the moment.
I think of detailing as, cleaning your car to a concourse level, with paint correction etc.
Most people do not do that.

Funnily enough, I got some on mine the day before the SE rr day, left it cos I can't be bothered washing it off and I noticed today that the paint looked a bit funky
I have never detailed a car, I washed, clayed, polished and waxed mine before PVS last year, like I'm gonna do that again 4 hours spent on it, parked it on the stand at PVS next to the old Big Gev, and it still looked grey compared to that. I might bother with it when I get it resprayed to keep it nice but I can't be bothered with it anymore. I can't see me doing much more than doing a wash and dry even if I get it resprayed, I've only ever cleaned it cos I was bored and didn't wanna spend money on petrol going out for a drive.
Swirl marks hidden by dirt ftw
