I been thinking about this for a while now due to the cost at the pumps.

I have used a Ford Mondeo 04 estate for this.

Price at the pumps, Diesel 117.9 V Petrol 107.9

Range based on 50L of fuel, Diesel 45mpg, 495 miles V Petrol 35mpg, 385 miles

TAX over 3 years (that's all it shows on Parkers), Diesel £500 V Petrol £740

To do an average of 15,000 miles a year, it'll cost, Diesel £5364.45 V Petrol £6312.15

To buy the same car apart from the engine, the Diesel is £1000 more expensive.

Now here is the fun bit........ The totals.

Over 3 years, Diesel £17,593.35 (a year £5864.45) V Petrol £19,676.45 (a year £6558.82)

So the Derv power plant has a saving of £2083.10 over 3 years, thats £694.37 a year saving.

I had fun working that out. I hope you had fun reading it all.

Tax for my 2.0TDCi Mondeo was only £62 for 6 months so maybe the tax is wrong?

I think your figures are wrong..........

x]Petrol [(15000/7.71)*1.079]£2099.22

Over 3 years:
Diesel £6853.68(a year £2284.56) [=(3*a)+ b +c]
Petrol £7037.66(a year £2345.89) [=(3*x)+y]

So the Derv power plant has a saving of £183.98 over 3 years, thats £61.33 a year saving.

but in all honesty; I wouldn't incl. the extra £1000 outlay for the diesel as its not truly a running cost and you're likely to get some of it back residually upon selling it.

My days you should have seen the state of the fuel filter, that had been on it from new

Just seen this bit. I know what you mean there. I also haven't taken into account the rise of fuel over the next 3 years either. It was just a quick calculation.

think about the figures your stating. I drive 15,000miles a year; it doesn't cost anywhere near £6500 a year to run my car.

Just to show again with petrol

35mpg = 7.71 miles per litre [ 1 uk gallon = 4.546 litres]

therefore 15000/7.71 = 1945.52 litres of fuel

1945.52litres @ £1.079 per litre = £2081.71 per year

If you mulitply £2081.71 by 3 years, you get £6245.13

If you add on the £740 tax [for 3 years] you get £6985.13

if you divide this by 3 to give a yearly running figure you get £2328.38 per year.

which is in no way £6588.82 as you quoted!

and the difference between the two is less than £200

Yep. Your right. I worked it out for 45k (3 years) then X3. Thats how i got that number.

So really, there is very little in it to buy a derv over the petrol.

nowadays there very little reason other than tax or if your doing very high mileage

Diesel used to be 10-15p cheaper than Petrol and is now the other way. Apparently this is because they're struggling to refine enough to meet demand as the number of diesel cars has rocketed.

Although sounds more like profit making to me.

I did a similar exercise when I was looking at whether to go for a diesel Anni or petrol Anni and I planned on only having it 2 years... the higher price to buy a diesel (£500 min) and higher pump prices negated the savings... esp when you consider that by gettign higher mpg I would have driven faster and been likely to get a similar mpg to what I get now... I simply stick to speed limits and avoid excessive acceleration when driving to and from work... makes no odds tbh as i struggle to get above the speed limits anyway due to traffic

Are you sure?? I alwats remember diuesle being way more expensive than petrol

It was a fair moons ago but yeah it used to be.

Did you know that when making petrol from crude oil, diesel is one of the products that follows.

So it just proves that they are upin' the price for one reason "coz they can"
