just in the middle of fitting them, volt etc. we have got a red wire, black wire and a red/white wire, when we fit the red wire to the igniton without the keys in they lights up which is going to kill my battery, what are we doing wrong?

sounds like your connecting it to a permanent live.needs to be connected to a switched/ignition live.

wires will be:
earth
illumination
ignition live
I imagine the red is ignition live, ed/white is illumination and black is earth

weres the best place for a switched/ignition live? as we thought the red wire at the ignition would but that seems to be a permenant live

any black wire behind the dash.

The ignition live is one of the black wires from the left hand side of the ignition barel where the red wire is. I think it has two wires going to it one thick and black and one a thinner black. Get a multi-meter to check though.
