From todays Echo...
Petr Cech was scouted by Gerard Houllier’s regime but that initial interest was never followed up.
Michael Essien also caught the Frenchman’s eye but without the necessary finances Houllier had to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
Rio Ferdinand was coveted before he moved from West Ham to Leeds but the £12.5m asking price was considered too high at a time when Houllier had to bolster several positions in his squad.
Nemanja Vidic was a target of Rafa Benitez having impressed for Serbia against Spain in World Cup qualifying games only for Liverpool to miss out when Man United entered the race for his signature and cranked up the price.
John Terry was briefly made available by a then cash strapped Chelsea in 2003 and Houllier was keen to bring him to Anfield only for a change of ownership at Stamford Bridge to thwart him.
Nicolas Anelka was desperate to become a Liverpool player after a successful loan spell but Houllier ditched his fellow countryman in favour of El Hadji Diouf.
And, most famously of all, Liverpool led the race for Cristiano Ronaldo and could have signed him for just £4m and a four-year contract worth £1m a year only for Houllier and Phil Thompson to decide that those figures were too high for an 18-year-old who was unproven in the Premier League.

Apparently we let a player go who then went on to win the European Cup Awesome.
Urban myth has it we also trialled Carsten Jancker when he was a kid.

we had Marcelo Salas and schevchenko (sp) on trial, we signed hartson and kitson instead (they did save us though)
Del assandro(sp) was on trial, and let go, wanted 1mil for him
John Terry, Sol Cambell and Ray Parlour were with us as kids
We let Jimmy bullard go
Matt Holland was with us at a young age
we somehow let Tevez and Mascherano (sp) slip through our hands
we fucked up signing Rob Lee at a young age
Harry Redknapp (whilst an bournemouth) somehow refused to sign Ian Wright after a trial

petr cech had a trial prior to joining rennes, c.ronaldo had a tour of highbury but the sporting lisbon agreement scuppered that, robinho signed for us then changed his mind if you believe the rumours and essien almost joined years and years ago. Patrick kluivert almost came loads of times over the years

Ronaldo would not have been the player he is today if he did not go to Man U
Ferguson has made Ronaldo the player he is and no other person would have been able to do that

I don't think Man U have had to do anything with Ronaldo other than play him in as many prem and euro games as possible. The guy as is pure class and if Liverpool did miss out on him or any club for that matter then that is one decision many will live to regret. As much as it pains to see a Man U player do so well he surely will be up there with the greats of all time

Palace were on the verge of signing ashley cole after a successful loan when the then arsenal left back suffered a bad injury and he was recalled. We also agreed terms with Bentley and he had verbally agreed to sign when blackburn came in for him and he chose them over us.

Not a chance, the guy has natural ability and that would of come through no matter where he was at - christ it could of been at Derby and it would of developed naturally.

1. You were United and had signed players for £30m+ previously.
2. We were the only team seriously sniffing about at the time so £4m probably indicated that.

Blackburn had a gentlemans agreement with Roy Keane and he was about to sign but then went to Man U
And also there is a urban myth round blackburn ( dunno if it is true ) but we were going to be buying Zidane the year we won the Title but decided against for sum reason.
