im i correct in thinking that US spec head units dont pick up FM fequency?

There's a couple of differences with the US specs. There's no RDS and even ending FM stations (after the dot). You'll still get Radio 1 and loads others. The main difference is that the US spec has higher pre-out voltages to external amps, which will mean less stress on them! THis is by far a better feature than RDS and a couple of radio stations.
