And when I say it was out, it really was. The steering wheel was upside down when going straight

And yours is nothing like that.

Had an e-tec one on my 1.6 16v fitted fine.

the 1.6 16v are different to the 1.2 16v's

If the wheels has massive toe in, or toe out, then it will make the car handle skitish. Your best bet is to fit a 24mm whiteline rear anti roll bar.
