my mum got one of lthese cheap £300 laptops, i think its a gateway.

The spec seems ok, but i think it just cant handle vista and all the other programs they put on it when they sell it. Whats the best way to speed it up, ive tried deleting most the crap programs, i think its mostly vista.

is it worth installing xp onto it? can you even buy xp anymore? I have a cd but no code

Install XP definately. If it's a lower spec machine it won't run too well with vista.

Yup get XP on there. Even on higher end machines Vista is still unnecessarily inefficient

Chances are its only got 1GB of RAM. A friend got one and it was really really bad but then I put another GB of ram in (under £20 from PC World) and then it was much much better.

At the end of the day, if you're gonna put more ram in, then you should still use XP anyway. It's just quicker and everything works and is compatible.

My girlfriends mum has the same problem, she paid next to nothing for what she thought was going to be a "good deal"... but oh no it turns out it only has like a 1.8Ghz (not dual core) and 512mb ram - this spec would be ok for XP but not for Vista...

It literally takes 10 mins to get to the desktop

Funny thing is you only have to spend £500-£600 to get a fairly good spec laptop from dell (with vista + goodies)

Mind you, you get what you pay for
