Want to buy a new laptop as starting a new job next month and think it would be usefull as need to do a bit of practicing; also maybe private work.

Will be mainly used for internet browsing but also for ASP.net web development and maybe a SQL database.

Dells are always a good bet, just spec one to the price you want to spend and it'll be at least as good as any alternatives.

Yeh the dell does look a good buy i must admit and a good name, but the same with the Vaio

i just brought the old dear a Dell Inspiron 1525 T5750 from tescos, £429....seems to work pretty well once you clear some of the crap off it

Sony's good name doesn't go over to the quality of their laptops, wouldn't even consider a vaio.
