Might have to reformat my HDD. However, I'd like to keep 'My Documents' as it contains all my music and such. I have a genuine XP Pro disc.

Is it possible to reformat but keeping stuff using the non-geek/technical format method?

I know to do that and it is what I would have done. I'm sure there is a way of saving it though, especially as it won't be a new HDD.

Hmmm.

If you're not replacing the HDD why do you need to re-format the disk?

Deano whats wrong with just copying and pasting it to another storage media? Yes there probly are ways of saving it, but its much less risky transferring it completely

Buy or borrow an external hardrive or get a second HD. You can get an 80GB drive for about £20 or spend more and go for a bigger drive. Transfer all your data and wipe your exisiting drive.

Got an external. Just thought there was a way of keep 'My Documents'.

It looks like I will just do it this way. The virus or what ever it is is really well hidden. AVG won't find it, yet the problems disappear in Safe Mode.
