I'm looking to upgrade my PC but i'm a bit out of touch with components.

Can someone recommend the following:

Motherboard (AMD/Intel) and which socket is best these days?
CPU (Obviously dependent on the above)
RAM (Probably start with 2GB but looking to upgrade to 4GB in the future)

I already have everything else.

Is a budget of about £300 realistic?

I would say £300 is perfectly fine, however I cant comment on the components really as I am a bit like you, slightly out of touch with whats new. From quick reading Intel's are very good these days, both on performance and price

edit - But I am an AMD fanboi, always have been, so I would always recommend an AMD

There is no reason to buy any current AMD over an intel, that's why they aren't making any money.

Yeh I always went for AMD for value for money but I don't think that's the case anymore.

Looking at this processor so far:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-193-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793&name=Intel%20Core%202%20Duo%20E8500%20LGA775%20'Wolfdale'%20%203.16GHz%20(1333FSB)%20-%20Retail

What's the different between Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad?

Which is better to buy? A slower Quad or a faster Duo.....?

Go for the E8400 (duel core) duel core should be fine for anything you want to do, quad is a bit of an overkill unless your doing really intense music/image work, or sending a spaceship to the moon.

The Intel Core2 Duo E8400, is the best for the performance/price sweetspot. Or you cang go for the slightly faster E8500.

edit; you already mentioned the latter, nevermind. Its the one id go for too!

i disagree with gibbon

q6600 is around the same price as E8400, and will reach 3.0ghz per core easily on an o/c (mines at 3.6).

mobo - asus p5ke wifi/ap solo

ram - corsair - ocz - geil - crucial ballistix, take your pick aslong as its pc6400 it'll be fine

I can't really be arsed to overclock TBH.

I don't know how it works and I don't have any intention of learning
