Seen that the other day, superb gesture and it does put a big percentage of other players that 'love' their club to shame.

Yeah but it begs the question why... if they wanted to keep him then surely they woudl pay... to me it seems more his way of beign abel to reach 500 games than them beign bothered about keeping him, not sure quite what to think really

Suppose we'll only see the spun story and not what actually happened behind the scenes but from that article and a couple other's i read it seems as if it's something he wanted to do and they'd have kept him on either way.

Why?

Because he is probably a multi-millionaire who loves his club, and wants to give something back to the fans. Nothing more to it IMO.

I agree with Nath, and Athletic Bilbao are one of them clubs that don't emply non-basque players, it's a tight unit it seems and probably one big family, where as your other clubs become multi-cultural and the directors treat their players as a machine.

Playing for a non-basque team when your basque is a dangerous thing in Spain, there was a player called Santi Ezquerro who left for Barcelona not long ago, his family were getting threats for ETA.

Maybe he wants to ensure he gets to his 500th appearance which then means he gets a huge testimonal and massive pay day anyway?
