Been looking for a new lense for my camera (Canon 400d) but dont know exactly what i'm looking for or what makes.
However, this is my situation... i do alot of motor sports and i'm mainly stood in the middle of a fields but quite away from the track, so i'm looking for quite some zoom and probably wide angle... only problem someones mentioned to me is about loosing the quality of a picture with some stronger zoomed lenses.
Can anyone recommend one?
Thanks

Deffo a decent zoom is needed.
Budget is a massive player here though, 50quid 2nd hand one, or 6 grand one?
Also, for around 20 - 70 quid (depending on the lens) theres a place you can hire them from for a week, so once you've narrowed your search down, you can hire it (time it so theres a motorsport event on) and see if you like it.

www.lensesforhire.co.uk I think you'll find
For my motorsport I spent nearly a grand on a good 300mm lens which is all I use now. Before that on my 400D I went for the new Canon 55-250mm lens.
Cost about £240 in Jessops but can be much cheaper online. Was an excellent lens although in drab weather its too slow. Plenty of focal length though, even at Silverstone

Canon does a 70-300mm F4-5.6 with image stabalisation and ultra sonic motor (faster and quieter than normal) for around £400ish.
Read some good reviews about that one and should be a decent focal length for motorsport

I use a 55mm-250mm lens, Canon brand. /was around £200 and it does me ok, Its about technique and moving your legs. Your not "Always" in feilds etc.
Your other choice is to get a Prime (fixed) focal lens which would give you great detail, you could pick up an F2.8 say lens. which would work great and would be fast.
its all about budget!

Well i've probably got about £150 - £200 budget.
I've been recommend the Sigma 70 - 300.
Where i go racing is an old RAF base and i am mainly stood in the middle of a field
I'm taking my camera into a dealer next weekend to have a little play with some of their lenses, mainly the Sigma as that's their top selling one.
Thanks

i looked at some pictures of the 70-300mm and the 55-250mm, the 300 was so soft at top end it was worthless having IMO hence why i choose the later... at the end of the day though its your money, go have a play and see what you like
