From my housemates experience, just literally panning with the car - he took an awesome shot of one of the John Guest racing cars at the BTCC at Brands in 2006, it looks amazing.

I may be wrong though, could just be some kind of photoshop instead.

That looks like panning as said, could also get similar if you were driving along beside it.

you need to use a slightly low shutter speed (will vary depending on the speed of the car)

The best technique is to follow the car through the viewfinder and reel off a string of shot if your camera has a continuos burst mode. Its difficult to achieve at first but with practise comes perfect

For the above photo, I used the following settings
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 21 mm

Start off on a higher shutter speed, 1/100, then keep dropping it untill you've found some decent results.

Probably my best panning shot from Trax last month, just a shame about the fence



That was 1/60 shutter speed. Just use shutter priority and don't expect a good usable shot to crap shot ratio Panning takes some getting used to and most of your early ones won't be sharp but once you get the hang of it it's worth it

I love panning, I took this one at Le mans this year. I usually take them around 1/80-1/100. Not sure if anyone can read the exif data on this, I like it anyhow.

Oooh didnt know you could do that! 1/160 is pretty quick, lets bare in mind le mans cars are astonishingly fast though!

Generally the faster the car is travelling the easier it is to pan (the slower your body/camera are moving the more vibration.

Monopods help reduce vertical movement, ive never used one though.

I picked up a monopod late in the motorsport year and really like using it (especially with a heavy lens). Can be a little restrictive though TBH.

DON'T use a tripod though, pain in the arse by the look of other people using one - not worth the hassle.

Would be pretty sketchy TBH. Monopod can just be cleanly twisted to give a nice pan. I think you'd be making your attempt more difficult on a one-legged tripod.
