I've said what I'd go for - 400D second hand no question, if someone had told me that to start with I'd have saved a fortune
Get down to your local jessops and have a feel of the Canon and Sony - see what you prefer. Then go home and find one online.

1000d is also .5 of a second slower than the 450d, cant remember how quick the 400 is but the 1000 takes 3 frames per second, adds up when your shooting continuously. The only differences between the 450 and 1000 other than that are the screen size is smaller on the 1000, 2.5" as opposed to 3" on the 450, its also 10mp as opposed to 12. Thats about it really, I would have said before the 450 is worth the extra few quid but since the 1000 has come down in price it seems really good value for money to me, it feels slightly less well made and robust than the 450, but its still a good quality camera. Id be considering either a 1000 or the a200, wouldnt even bother with a d40.
