Have damp at the bottom of a couple of walls one is internal.
Is this rising damp?

Very little information to go on, but I would say probably not rising damp.
More likely to be condensation problems.
It would be much better to solve WHY its damp though, than just lump some goo on it and hope it clears up

we have damp in our rented student house at the minute which has been diagnosed as being caused by condensation. We're having some work done on it tomorrow apparently, so i'll see what they do and report back!

I would imagine they'll fit trickle vents to the top of your windows - most un-invasive thing they can do and pretty cheap

We have damp in our cottage. I believe it's caused by the fact that the driveway outside is a good few feet above the inside of the house, the lack of drainage around the place and the underground river that runs beneath is 
All in all, it's a shit house

Yep, it'll definately be one of those. Most likely the first - where possible keep the outside ground level below the inside.

The patio at the rear is half way up the vents and about 2mm away?

the plaster has come off up the wall 1700mm, its getting a damp course and is being boarded with some special foam stuff behind it, making a rite bloody mess!

What vents? Air brick do you mean?
If so its bridged the damp proof course and letting water soak into the brickwork. You really need to get the level of the patio down to solve it, or install some sort of waterproof barrier between the patio and the wall.

Ah right - insulating it. Most expensive way, but sometimes the only option.
And yes, its always very messy!

nearly finished cleaning up, but I think i'll be finding dust for weeks to come! They've done a cracking job though, the plaster was a bit ropey anyway to be honest, so they've skimmed the rest of the wall as well!
