Basically i'm thinking about adding some ceiling lights upstairs in my new build property. If i buy fire rated ones that are encased, does anyone know if this covers me on insurance.
I know new build houses have some sort of 10yr thing with them, just wondering if adding new lights with extra wiring would still cover me.
Does anyone know the regulations on whether i can fit them myself or if i really need an electrician to fit them and sign them off as ok to keep ones insurance valid incase of a fire.
I could go ahead and do it but want to be sure first.

Check the insurance certificate? Or give them a ring? I should say every policy is a tiny bit different...

I've never heard of lights voiding insurance.
If you fit non fire encased ones they shouldn't be setting fires either.
How would they know they didn't come fitted?

Well very true. If the place burnt down i doubt they would find the cause!
I'm just being a bit weiry with it being my first home i suppose!
Good idea to check the insurance documents, i'll get onto it.

If you aren't confident enough to fit a light without thinking it'll set fire to the house i'd maybe get an electrician anyway.

Changing light fittings wont affect it, just if something goes wrong with those lights, it wont be covered as you've modded them.

Yeh don't worry about it, only thing i was told about mine when i moved in was in the case that i sell i must put up the lights that came with the property in the hallways (energy saving shitters) otherwise it cant go on the market. Yeh alrite mate

Technically, I don't think you're allowed to do any work to the electrical system yourself.
Whether you do or don't get a qualified person to do it is up to you though really.
