First off need to do this free.

So far I have

Ripped my videos from the burnt disc as an AVI using AutoGK

Cut and cropped everything I need to do with VirtualDub, no problems there

Ive now got a 26 minute AVI that I need to burn to a DVD which will play on your average Joe DVD player, none of these fancy 'I play everything and anything' jobs

I converted it to an image (.ISO) file using AVi2DVD, then tried burning it as a image using ISO recorder, works fine on my laptop but doesnt work on the DVD player

Im just about to give it a go as a VCD as it should still fit on there fine, as it could be that our DVD players dont read whatever discs ive got (some dont read + or - R's dont they??)

I used to do this all the time so its a little frustrating that I have forgotten everything about what to do Am I doing it correctly?

Get a program called convert x to dvd.
Drag and drop your avi file and it will convert it to a regular Audio_TS and Video_TS folders. Ready to burn as regular data. Should play in all players providing on which media you use.

I think thats my problem, its the media not the content, as the original is burnt in a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS format, which AFAIK should have just worked like a shop bought DVD

Yeah some players are fussy on the make of media. Others aren't so much. Generally -R is a bit more compatible but most modern players accept both. Try a different brand of disc.
