the vehicle speed sensor is dodgy.
the vss is on the gearbox and sends the signal to your electronic clocks.
The unusual idle is caused by the vss too its easy to replace but just check its plugged in properly before buying a new one

Check fuse for cig lighter, i know it sounds daft but read on.
Happened to my mates, speedo didnt work, and the car drove funny, and sometimes cut out, the speedo and the cig lighter run off the same fuse (daft i know) and if its blown, will stop them both working, if the speedo doesnt work, the car doesnt know how fast its going, so cant mix the right amout of air/fuel, thus causing it to idle dodgy. Try it first, might not be, but also might be

My mate had this in his sport, and it took us about a month in total to figure it out!
A 5p had feel behind the back of the lighter and shorting it out
