Ive got a picture to take one day this week as a 50th Birthday present for my G/Fs dad,

my plan is to take a pic of my girlfriend and her twin sister, get it printed and framed, and give it him for his 50th in january

Im thinking B&W plain white background 50mm + tripod

for light though im thinking of bodging up a DIY softbox some of the ones Ive seen online seem to produce decent results and I cant justify spending 200 dabs on one when I wont really use it that often

any tips for my proposed picture?

why don't you see if someone on TP has a set up in the NW that you could borrow?
You would then have great lighting with your set up for free?
