Me and the missus currently own a Saxo VTS and a 1.2 8v clio...the saxo NEVER SEEMS TO WANT TO WORK!!!

So if thought about get her a car that will break aswell to get the silly smirk off her face when ive been working on it in the freezing cold.

Well anyway looking at mg tf's...any good? anyone owned one before? wud be after either the standard 135 bhp or if i put a little money her way a 160vvc...i fancy cheap rwd action if im honest and these seem to be a good buy at moment, headgasket can be replaced for £150 so i aint too bothered about that.

Might also flog the saxo for one before getting a clio cup sorted out...bit of a stop gap(summer time fun)

opinions welcome

head gaskets are the usual, if you have a look underneath its a rover 100 lol there not bad looking wee cars but headgaskets are a problem and the water pipes that run under the car and prone to rusting and cause problems

cheap nasty and bloody good fun

i love mine

full set of brake disks inc pads is 70 quid, service parts are so cheap its laughable, cheap insurance (main reason i bought the car cos i lost my NCBs but still wanted something that would make me smile)! buy it upgrade the headgasget then your sorted, just make sure the suspension is in tip top condition or the car is let down big time

mine

then when the rear suspension was fecked and i continued to drive it

that happend months ago and i took it off the road to get the suspension fixed, at the time it was 1 side leaking but i killed the suspension totally when i crashed! just re-mot'd it and its taxed again now sadly the weather is crap so wont be driving it much

top gear vid of when it was first released http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wfW4q3E0mSU

and if were talking like for like id rather have a mgf over a mx5 as your able to get a car a few years newer and less milage for the same cash

I think they are just as quick. especially if you get a 1.8

Even if it isnt as quick it will be far supirior to drive and more reliable.
However I have to agree I prefer the looks of the MG

Although if its just for the mrs to pottle around in she might just want to drive both and see what she likes.

Although if your going to get a shot of the keys reguarly I would convince her to get the mazda

With an MX5, its not about straightline speed. Early models have a 50/50 weight distribution, the later rounder models have a 48/52 I think, but more power.

MG might even be a little quicker, but the MX5 is a belter of a little car!!!!!! Should be plenty enough for your missy, and a great drive on small bendy back road on the weekend.

Overall, A to B on a nice country lane, the MX5 will be much quicker.

i always thought the mazda was slightly slower tbh but could be wrong cos the 160 mgf was sub 7 secs and about 140mph (feck that tho as id be scared the roof would fly off)

I like the look of the MGTF, the trophy models look great and are pretty quick with 160bhp on tap

daimo the mgf ran rings round the mx5 handling wise on track

mx5 may be better on a country road tho due to softer suspension

did some reading on it,mgf was faster kinda had to be tho when it used the mx5 as a benchmark

mgf grippier and slightly faster than the mx5 on track however the mx5 felt safer

MX-5 (mk1)
Torsional Stiffness: 6000Nm/degree (approx)

MGF
Torsional Stiffness: 7100Nm/degree

so mgfs slightly better but compare them to the daddy

Lotus Elise
Torsional Stiffness: 10500Nm/degree

buy her an elise

oh rememberd something else!

worse car iv ever owned to put fuel in the tank! honestly its a joke trying to get the dam nozzle past the neck of the fuel tank so it doesnt keep clicking!

plus its kinda a gay car

manual roof sucks

parking next to big kerbs as the things that low makes getting out rather ungraceful

boot aint very big, weekend luggage only

ummm will add more negatives when i think of them

My gf has had one for last couple yrs, seems a good car used everyday had no problems apart from the suspesion needed pumping up and the usual serviceble things, hers is white and is a total bitch to clean! Altho theres a few things that really piss me off is the wind noise from the roof!! It had the headgasket upgraded before she got it and it did overheat once due to the fan not cutting in and belive it or not the gasket was all sweet and still is too this day so the metal gaskets must pretty decent, its great fun drive even just the 130brake one. Id def get a hardtop for it tho! The engines arent that hard to work on once u unbolt the cover its fairly easy to axcess it.
