how do i know what condition my oil is in and when it needs topping up just by looking at the dipstick, i.e. colour, viscocity, mark on stick?

Come on this is basic stuff even my wife knows how to check and top up the oil if required, buy a workshop manual and change the oil and filter at the required mileage for your car / engine.

i know how to do it, just want clarification what point to change it as well as genuine mileage stuff

Check it's between the marks, change every year/10k.

I change mine about every 6000 miles use 15/40 semi synth , some people will change before this miles or well after and use various oil and grades its all up to the individual and there car engine and miles on engine.

10k on cheap gm 10w40 is more than enough.
