http://www.jamesturner.co.uk

This is the business I plan to pursue if/when I get made redundant.

I just used a template because I'm crap at design but I've changed quite a lot on it.

Thanks

The menu bar thing doesn't work in IE8.

I'm crap at anything creative too so can't offer any suggestions how to fix it but my first impressions would be it looks a bit amateurish.

Maybe worth getting somebody to design a slick one for you if you start getting work?

I tried so hard to make it look professional. That's why I didn't design it myself.

Anything in particular that you think makes it look amateur or just the overall design?

TBH The website isn't going to be used to attract clients as I already have the contacts I need and I will also just be getting contracts through agencies.

I just thought it could do with a website.

It looks nice fella, but it still looks like a template.

Get a logo created and put that in top left.

The time and date don't display in the correct position for me (Safari browser).

Have a look at http://cssmania.com for a bit of inspiration in design.

Does still look a bit like a template, but interesting enough and clearly gets across the information you're trying to say.

I like it. Only thing I'd do would be to remove the date/time and replace it with something else since most people already know this

There was a search box there before but I didn't need that and didn't know what to replace it with

I've already filled one gap with a cheesy tagline - don't want another one

Also, I am going to get a logo created at some stage.

I just threw that together in a couple of hours last night.

I'm not going to bother getting a designer for the website because there is no real need for an amazing website. It is just there to give a bit of info.

As Liam has said, get a logo and sort the alignment for the date/time (doesn't align for me using Google Chrome).

TBH though your comment about "TBH The website isn't going to be used to attract clients as I already have the contacts" I disagree with.

If you are serious about starting your own business (if you decide to do it), then having a website acts as another form of communication for your company. If someone Googles/searches in yell.com for example for "software solutions" and your company details & website came up, you could be loosing a potential new customer because you weren't arsed about your website?

If you want to survive in business you can't just rely on existing contacts and agencies to work for you alone - you should be taking advantage of any opportunity possible to get new business in.

A valid point but I don't think that website is bad enough to go as far as putting people off.

Might be wrong though.

No I wasn't saying it was crap - in fact I think it's a good starting block for building your website - I'm just saying you shouldn't dismiss having a website as a potential source of revenue generation.

How much does professional logo design cost?

Your probably looking at anything from £50-£350 for a logo, depending on how good the graphic designer is that you choose.

Looks like a template to me, but might only be because I knew it was. With a professional looking logo and a few changes it wouldnt be too bad - dont do the logo yourself though as that will be used on more than just the website so needs to look professional.

Also, I have to agree with Sam about the website not attracting the clients. Even if I know a company and the services they can offer (and even the quality of this work) I'll always tend to go on their website for more info, contact details, etc. and if it looks shitty it puts me off the company. Mainly because I know getting a half decent website made by someone who knows what they are doing really doesnt cost that much.

Try http://99designs.com/

You post a brief, amount of cash you're willing to spend and people submit all their designs and you pay the person who designs your final logo.

It looks a bit too out the box if you know what i mean. Best idea, is too get a uni student or similar to design you one, and pay £500. They'll appreciate the money and you'll get a unique site made for you

TBH I don't need someone to actually write the site, just design it.

I'm a web/software developer so I know HTML/CSS inside out. Just have a terrible eye for design.

It shouldnt cost any more than a few £100 to get someone to design a logo and a site and then you do the programming around it.

Ask people like JonnyJ or Adz on here, they'll probably be happy for the work and do a decent rate.
