I was wondering if the VGA connector for monitor can be used like a RS232 serial port because they look the same but are they any different?

Nope. Same size D-connector but different number of pins (9 vs 15)...
If your computer doesn't have a 9-pin serial port (and you need one) you can buy a USB to RS232 converter from any decent computer shop

Do you know the difference between the converters and the cables, the cables are about £10 odd but the convertors are a lot more.
It seems to be difficult to get a vista driver for it as well.

RS232 port is really old, is it for a OBD Code Reader by any chance?
I bought a USB -> 232 converter and the reader completely failed to work on XP and Vista.
I think it works ish for some things but its very fidgety about it. The way I got round it was to go to a local computer shop and bought a crappy old laptop that came with the port already on it, cost me £70 but works a dream

Indeed it is for carsoft 6.5 they need a serial port to work properly, some people have used a usb to rs232 and made it work others just crashed so I'm going to get an rs232 express card.
The express cards seem to range a lot in £ but I suppose they are all about the same so will go for a £15 odd one I think.
