From the suggestions in this thread I would go with
CTR - Love mine to bits. wont break unless you crash it, nice and roomey, nice and nippy. Only thing letting it down is motorway cruising if you do lots of miles as the ride is quite hard and there is alot of road noise compared to other cars. doesnt bother me though
Focus ST170 - nice and nippy. Good handling. Good looking (imo) spacious and suprisingly refined
astra coupe/gsi pritty much the same as the focus but worse handling but better straight line speed
Not sure what the focus and astra are like on juice but the CTR is very good on fuel if you put your sensible hat on and stay out of tec
EXAMPLES
CTR

Nice colour and fully loaded with aircon etc
FOCUS
you are spoilt for choice there are millions here is one at random
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/FORD+FOCUS/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-19-240-4294967193-4294967194/advert.action?R=200902112542902&distance=46&postcode=SS7+2HD&channel=CARS&make=FORD&model=FOCUS&min_pr=&max_pr=5000&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2002&vehicleRegLetter=52

I have added some links to my last post. only a quick search but shows there is plenty of choice of each. If you look hard you will probably be able to do alot better then that.
I have a CTR and still dont like how it looks that much. But tbh I am sat in it not outside it and its lovely to drive so thats what matters the most

a friend of mine had one briefly and i thought it was a nice car, not as slow as people say on here( most might be jumping on the bandwagon though) fad on here has a 182 and his parents have an st-170, im sure he said the focus isnt far behind the 182 in terms of performance
the st-170 reminded me of a ctr just more mild in every way so on the plus side its more comfy and less manic but downside is its not as fast as a ctr and both similar on fuel.
for those reasons my first choice would be a ctr, you going to struggle to get a better all rounder newish daily drive for the money. second choice would either be a 172/182 or focus st170
